The American Football Bund Österreich (AFBÖ) was established in 1982 and comprises of tackle football, flag football and cheerleading
The AFBÖ has 28 tackle football teams (25 men, 3 women), 17 flag football teams and a total of 6,300 members. Austrian football has five leagues (4 men, 1 women): the AFL – Austrian Football League, DIV 1, DIV 2, DIV 3 and Division Ladies. There are also seven Prep Leagues in five age categories.
The AFL is the top League in Austria and one of Europe’s best and in 2008, three of Austria’s top four teams were ranked 1, 2 and 3 in Europe. Austria has a record of seven Eurobowl titles.
In 2011 Austria was the host for the 4th IFAF World Championships of American Football, organized by the AFBÖ. 20.000 spectators watched the final day in Viennas Ernst Happel-Stadium.
The AFBÖ broadcasting partner is ORF. Regular season games and the Austrian Bowl are broadcasted live. Also live broadcasting of NFL games are common practice since Superbowl XXXII in 1998.
