A stunning World Flag Football Championships concluded at the Maracana Stadium, Panama City, Panama, on Sunday with the United States sweeping the gold medals in front of over 2000 passionate fans.
The highly anticipated women’s final saw the United States take on reigning champions, Panama on their home turf. Both Panama and the US entered the playoffs with an undefeated record and in making the final despatched Denmark then Mexico and Japan and Canada respectively.
In a thrilling final, the United States wrapped up the crown with a 27-12 victory, led by a stunning display by game MVP Vanita Krouch.
In the men’s final Austria were the opponents for the US, with the Europeans seeking to avenge a 38-24 defeat at the hands of the US in the group stage.
The United States boasted a 5-0 record as they entered the playoffs and defeated Israel then Denmark on their way to the final. Austria, who had posted a 3-2 record from the group stages, made their way past Canada then Mexico.
Whilst pushing all them all the way, Austria were not able to nullify the potent US offense and, led by a stellar performance from game MVP Greg Meek, the reigning champions brought home the crown for a record third time with a 19-12 victory.
